Red Brendans FC started life in Division 3 of the Braintree Sunday League for the 2003/2004 season. After one relatively unsuccessful debut term the club decided to refocus and became part of the lower tier of the Mid Essex Saturday Football League Division 5 for the 2004/2005 season.
The Braintree outfit spent the first two seasons of a more organised and competitive Saturday football in division five allowing the then management duo of Adrian Browning and Paul Disley to bring in some new playing staff and strengthen for a promotion push.
Success followed! After finishing fourth, Red Brendans gained promotion to Division 4 for the 2006/2007 season and was by then under new management. Goalkeeper Spence Norton took over directive responsibility bringing with it some interesting ideas to say the least. This aside, after a slow start, Red Brendans picked up following Christmas and put together an excellent run to gain a second consecutive promotion to Division 3, narrowly missing out to champions elect Great Baddow and finishing a creditable second.
The turn of fortune was by no way a coincidence as it coincided with the appointment of player manager Daniel Bailey. Bailey took over the helm after internal wrangling between Norton and various team members towards the end of 2006.
The 2007/2008 league season was far less turbulent as the team consolidated their Division 3 status by finishing eighth. However the highlight of this campaign and possibly their history was to follow for Red Brendans. At 7.30pm on Tuesday 7th May 2008 the club, now dubbed 'The Express', competed at Maldon Town's ground in their first cup final! Unfortunately it finished in defeat losing to Great Baddow by four goals to nil in the league cup.
Under the guile leadership of Bailey and assistant Paul Disley The Express experienced their most successful season to date. Finishing third in division three, winning 14 games and scoring 67 goals!.
From the clubs inception it has been sponsored by Brendans Steakhouse and Carvery in Braintree and a special note of thanks should be made to club Chairman Brendan Flynn who's offered great support over the years, especially in those early days when the team was being set up.
Further thanks should also be given to club secretary Ray Browning who not only stood in as caretaker manager when needed, but turns up to every game, home or away, to offer support and act as linesman.
In recent months the team have also had the added support and guidance of Mark Reardon who's advice has been invaluable during the last campaign; thanks Mark!!
The team has always had a very relaxed yet competitive approach to their football. It is a close knit outfit who will be pushing on to achieve further success in Division 2 for the 2009/2010 season!!!!
